ASK KIM
Don't Let a Dog Bite Your Coverage

Ever since I moved to Florida, I’ve been unable to obtain homeowners insurance because I have a rottweiler. Is there anything I can do to get coverage?

Many dog owners are having the same trouble these days. Insurers have had to pay some large liability claims resulting from dog bites. Consequently, insurers are making it more difficult for owners of certain breeds to get coverage. In fact, one of the families included in "The Lowdown on Premiums" article in the June issue had to provide the insurance company with pictures of their dog before they could get coverage -- even though she's just a basset hound!

The American Kennel Club has been lobbying to get some of the laws changed, or at least help dog owners search for coverage. Their Web site includes a list of insurance companies' policies on covering specific breeds. Each company has different rules about the dogs it will and won’t cover.

You may also get some help from the American Rottweiler Club, whose members know from experience which insurers will cover the breed.

It’s also worthwhile to call a local independent insurance agent, who works with many companies and knows their dog rules. The Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America can help you find an agent in your area.
