Still searching for the perfect gift? Well, it might not be the most romantic idea, but why not consider tax preparation software?
Before you scoff, think about all the wrapped-up neckties, power tools, cologne and other Christmastime classics that have been the brunt of jokes for years. You may get some strange looks when the object of your generosity opens the package, but he or she will be thanking you come tax-return time.
Our favorite program is TaxCut, published by H&R Block, in part because it's packed with advice from Kiplinger. We can recommend it with a straight face because, year after year, independent reviewers place it at the top of the heap of tax software for its thoroughness and ease of use. It's better than ever this year, with all the latest tax law changes built in.
The program leads users through an easy-to-follow interview that elicits the information necessary to complete the return. Along the way, you'll find Kiplinger help and advice available at the click of a mouse. An "auditor" function checks the return for inconsistencies and omissions. When you're done, the program prints out a return, ready for your signature or, better yet, lets you file electronically from the comfort of your home.
We think electronic filing is a great idea. For one thing, there's no chance an IRS employee will make a mistake entering your data. For another, you'll get your refund within three weeks, instead of the six weeks to three months it's likely to take if you file on paper.
In addition to easing the tax-return chore for 2004 returns, TaxCut is filled with tax-saving ideas for the future. And it won't bust your gift budget.
